Shop Small This Christmas

Shop Small This Christmas

Shopping small this Christmas is the best way to find new and unique gifts, that you won't find on the high street.

Hi, my names Jennie and I own an online stationery and giftware store, that stocks items from indie brands around the world. I wanted to create a space on the internet where people could come and discover new brands and products - whilst having an easy shopping experience too. You can shop over 50+ indie brands on our website and the best bit is, you only have to pay 1 postage fee!

I've compiled a small list of my top tips for shopping small this Christmas. I've even included some recommendations of my fave stores, so keep scrolling to read more about those.

Top tips for shopping small this festive season!

1. Shop early!

Shopping early is super duper important this year. Royal Mail have a lot of planned strikes for the month of November, meaning there will be even more delays than usual at this time of year. Where possible, I strongly recommend starting to shop as early as possible. This allows the businesses you're purchasing from plenty of time to pick, prep and pack your order to get it ready to ship out to you. Another little extra tip, choose tracked shipping if possible. Us small businesses know that tracked shipping can be a little more expensive than standard, but it really helps both the business and customer if the parcel goes missing.

2. Do your reading!

To avoid any disappointment, make sure to read all of the delivery information and descriptions so you know that what you're ordering, is exactly what you want! Make sure to take extra care when reading product sizing and turnaround times. This is extra important when you're shopping on places like Etsy - a lot of products on there are handmade/made to order. Those types of products can't be made just by clicking your fingers, there is a lot of time and effort put into making such beautiful items.

3. Check for local/online stockists

Has your fave business ran out of stock of a product you had your eye on? Fear not, many small businesses now have stockists! That's right, you will be able to shop some of your fave brands elsewhere. There's tonnes of UK based stores just like ours, a lot of them actually have physical stores too (the absolute dream!) I also follow some that are based in the USA and Australia. If you're local to Milton Keynes in the UK, make sure to check out Shrimp & Doodle they also have an online store if you aren't local!

Two of my faves in the USA are Calliope Paperie in Natick, Massachusetts and Mill & Meadow (Elyse Breanne Design) in Durham, North Carolina. Both of which have physical store fronts you can visit, and Calliope Paperie can be shopped from online too!

Special mention to Stash World in day I will travel to all of these stores I've mentioned!

P.s Both Calliope and Stash World stock some of the same brands we do! So if you're dying to get your hands on Nutmeg & Arlo, Ocean Hughes or PipSticks and so many others- they're both a great option if you're outside of the UK.

4. Look out for gift wrapping services

That's right, a lot of small businesses offer a gift wrapping service during the festive season (some offer it all year round!) - This means you can get your items beautifully wrapped, and even sent direct to the recipient! Most businesses will also allow you to write a small gift message to add in with your order. This is one of the main reasons I personally love shopping small, all the cute personal touches that come with the amazing buying experience.

5. Enjoy yourself!

Shopping small is super fun and rewarding! Sit back and relax on the sofa with a hot chocolate whilst you browse all the independent online retailers. Or wrap up in your favourite winter coat and head out to your local independent stores this festive season. I know I probably speak for us all when we say we appreciate all of your support. Whether you buy from us, visit our stores/websites, follow us on social media - every bit of it means the world to us.

Enjoy your Christmas shopping!
